Marketing and advertisement - Restaurant Viaduckt

The bold print of red, white and black is effective with its simplistic layout. 

The quirky font fits in  with the area of Hardbrucke and the shops that are situated below the Viaduct.

The matches serve as practical pocket matches as well as a advert.

Marketing and advertisement - Marktlucke

On my visit to Zurich, there was a rich variety of business cards and leaflets that caught my eye.

Below is for Marktlucke, a small shop beside the river which sells products made by small businesses that proceeds go towards women who want to  re-integregate into the working process, with products that fit the gaps in the market. Each item is handcrafted and often using recycled materials.

The sewn spine with trailing thread drew me to the recycled paper.

inside they explain that they have a restaurant Kantine Hermetschloo. The way the pictures spread over the fold is a pleasing change in layout.

It is constructed by two concertina  recycled paper,sewn together with red thread. Its no bigger than my hand, suitable for pockets and bookmarking.

So I won something...!

We had come back from Antwerp with some super photos and there was a Photo competition opened by TravelBound, who run trips abroad for schools and universities.
All you had to do was hashtag and mention the company in your photo on Instagram.

A few weeks later, after having completely forgotten about it, I get a message saying Ay up you’ve won!
I spoke to a wonderful woman, Helen, and I asked, ‘What is the prize?’ - I am now £500 richer on Amazon!!

I was asked to print off the voucher and photograph myself with it and write a bit about myself and what I’ll do with the money.

I wrote -

I’d never imagine I would win!  The photo is from our university trip to Antwerp, it was such a visually inspiring city with so much to capture. I’d like to thank University of Gloucestershire Illustration lecturers for letting us have so many opportunities to travel abroad. 

I don’t quite know what I’ll use the money for, I’m making a wish list! So far I have a good set of headphones and art materials to help me in my final year at uni. I didn’t realise Amazon sold so many things so I’ll be going through all the departments.

The winning image at first makes you think quite 'what is this?' Then as you study the image you get a real treat of graphical lines and shades of light as you discover how the scene is made up, giving you a great sense of satisfaction now that you can see what is in the image and how well it is constructed. Wedding cards

I was asked by one of my friends from collage to design some wedding business cards for their new company.

They said that they saw my Jazz festival sketches on Facebook and thought they’d suit their feel.

I created these and coloured them in Photoshop.

They’re hopefully going to use them on their website and for cards.

Glenfall primary school 9th 10th 13th June

work experience at Glenfall primary school in Charlton Kings.
Organised by Niki Whitefeild and COS.
Me, Sammi and Alexis spent a few days there, and I helped out on the COS open day in the Saturday.
Me and Sammi were stationed with Jake Lever, (http://www.leverarts.com)  a fine artist based in Birmingham who has recently taken the leap to go freelance.
He’s done murals and creative spaces, as well as  exhibits held in churches.

Tuesday -

There for a 9am start, we are based in the school hall.  There are a range of workshops available for the children to choose from.

Embroidery, tile making, styrofoam printing, 3D birdhouses and Jakes 3D buildings.

There was a range of materials from a recycling store Jake had got hold of - lenses (which the children loved to make glasses and telescopes out of), plastic hoops and scraps, sticks, styrofoam, tape, glue and more glue.

We had the theme of THE CITY OF OUR DREAMS and Jake had printed off a few examples of contemporary structures, such as the Bullring shopping center in Birmingham, the Shard.

We said, “ we want you to create your own city, with no boundaries.” I found myself promoting the children - what does a city have? What does your town have in it? Hospital, school, post office... I asked questions that helped the children come up with ideas on what purpose their building had - does your mum like to garden? her favourite colour? do you have pets? etc etc

By doing this I found that the children relaxed and were able to have their imagination woken... ‘I will have a tower for the dogs to live in and blue flowers because my mum loves flowers’ and so on. You were constantly talking to them, asking why and what do you think?

I felt that standing and bending over them uncomfortable, so knelt back beside them to talk to them on their own level. Some were particularly shy, and were prompted  by questions referring their family or on a personal level (what do you enjoy doing? Whats your favourite room in your house?). Once you began to get a few answers, the rest came easier.

We had the classes mixed, so each hour we had yr2 and yr5 etc, The year 6 were independents and needed little help, surprisingly similar were Reception. We had them first on the wednesday and couldn’t believe how fantastic they were. Incredibly independent and unlike all the other years, didn’t ask once for some sellotape to be given to them... we felt a bit conned!

As well as making buildings, we got them to draw a picture of an imaginary building. There were a few with robot arms and rockets as well as castles with pink curtains. Puppies and sisters had their entire own tower and spaceships flying from the roof.

On the Tuesday afternoon, me and Sammi painted a background for the display in the corner of the library. This was to layer up all the paper houses we had and make a cityscape, and select a  few 3D sculptures to sit on the bookcases.

On the Saturday it was a slightly later start of 10am, and I helped Jake set up printing. We were using collograph prints to make BIRDS OF PARADISE. This was a open studio day, so we had parents as well as children.

evaluation

For this module I feel I have learnt a lot about how quick the industry moves and that you have to be very sharp to get your work out there to the right people. It’s been great producing work that I have sold, as I feel I don’t make enough ‘final’ products.

Having listened to guest speakers and asking them how they have made it to where the are has been really inspirational, and I have been taught that hard work, perseverance and determination are important, as well as producing beautiful artwork. No story has been an easy one, and I’m learning that to gain what you want to achieve can only be done so through grit and hard work.
I would like to keep producing sellable work or more graphic based work, as I have previously done some craft stalls.

Communication is key of illustration, communication through your work, to people and advertising and promotional means.

Unfortunately I didn’t manage to gain a work placement, but I feel now I should have pursued it further, and that emails aren’t the greatest means of talking. I did manage to do some work for stalls though, which has gained me some extra work through that. I do find that I need a website for my work (not the blogs I am currently running for modules) and business cards would be useful. I’ll look at these over the summer and hopefully use my sketches from travels to make books... which I feel is the way I would like to go as I enjoy making books and favour my sketching.
